Potassium Citrate reduces kidney stones 12-fold
Potassium citrate reduced kidney stones 12-fold during this 3 year study. The dose used was 30-60 mEq of potassium citrate or 3080-6160 mg of potassium citrate. Potassium citrate is 38% potassium, so these doses contained 1170-2340 mg of potassium. Citrate is a precursor to bicarbonate in the body, so I imagine that potassium bicarbonate would also reduce formation of kidney stones.
